Chess figures

These nine chess figures were made by a miner in a Saarlandic sleeping quarter. Miners who were housed in sleeping quarters had various options for activities during their leisure time. These included, among other things, the carving of nativity figures or toys. The handles of broken tools or brooms were used as material for this purpose. These black chess figures were coloured using shoe polish.
