This plaque commemorates the enslaved Africans liberated by the West Africa Squadron.
After the abolition of Slavery in 1807 the British Navy went from protecting slaveships to hunting them down.
To achieve this task The West Africa Squadron was created. Over 50 years they patrolled three thousand miles of African Coast.
Between 1808–1860 the Squadron liberated 150,000 enslaved Africans, though this was just a fraction of the total sold into slavery in the period.
This plaque was created by BBC History and is one of twenty placed around the world for the series Black and British: A Forgotten History.
