Plate tectonics

The earth’s continents are in a perpetual state of motion. More than 100 years ago, Alfred Wegener introduced the public to his theory, which was new and revolutionary at the time, in one of the auditoriums in the Senckenberg Nature Museum in Frankfurt. What Wegener did not yet know was that the driving force that moves the continental plates originates from the convection currents of the red-hot core of the earth. The collision of plates leads to the formation of high mountain ranges. In places where the crust melts again, volcanoes bear witness to these forces in the earth’s interior.
