The first player piano appeared around 1896, but the heyday of the player extended from about 1900 to 1930. During this time, like today, music played an important role in home entertainment and leisure. People entertained themselves and each other by playing the latest hits from Tin Pan Alley and by joining in sing-alongs at the piano. Even those who could not play the piano were then able to enjoy the luxury of live music in their homes.
