In the grassy areas surrounding the Reden pit, children from miners' families of various ages played together in the 1960s. Next to the families themselves, the so-called "Werksfürsorge" was also responsible for the wellbeing of the children.
Children were sent to holiday homes or so-called "Höhensonnenstationen" (literally: "sun stations") to recuperate at regular intervals or as required for weeks at a time.
