Anton Van Leeuwenhoek (1632–1723) was interested in observing other kinds of objects. In order to satisfy his curiosity, he needed the right type of device on which to put his specimens. He therefore devised a kind of pincer or needle that could hold small animals or plants so he could place them in front of the lens and magnify them.
