Vienna, Austria

This early liturgical garment originally belonged to the Göss Benedictine nunnery and was produced there. It is one of several vestments which are known to art history as the Göss Vestments. It is the only almost entirely preserved ensemble of its kind from the 13th century. In 1908, after the abbey was dissolved, the vestments were purchased by the MAK. The cope is made of linen and is embroidered with silk. It places the Virgin Mary in the center, who is surrounded by the four Evangelists’ symbols and rich animal décor and geometric décor.
