Story: While primarily known for her novel Uncle Tom’s Cabin, Harriet Beecher Stowe wrote and published poetry, primarily religious in nature. Stowe was the daughter and sister of ministers, and her Christian views informed her world outlook. She condemned slavery as a moral and spiritual wrong. Through this poem, Stowe encourages readers to place faith in God who “will wipe away the every tear” when all hope seems gone.
