In the postwar period, the American Jewish Joint Distribution Committee (“the Joint”) shipped vital supplies to the needy, promoted economic activity, and supported a network of schools, homes, hospitals, and cultural institutions in Poland. Dzierzoniow, in Lower Silesia, became a major Jewish resettlement center. Survivors went there to begin new lives. The Joint partnered with the Organization for Rehabilitation through Training (ORT) to develop vocational training programs in needlework, radio technology, carpentry, and cardboard working.
