This 1978 cartoon depicts Marion Barry and his two opponents in the mayoral election: incumbent Walter Washington as a mummified, ineffective bureaucrat, and civil rights leader Sterling Tucker, Chairman of the D.C. Council, as a puppet of “His Highness.” Barry, the young activist At-Large Councilmember, was portrayed as a hero.
