About the author: Alfred Wierusz-Kowalski, (1849 Suwałki – 1915 Munich), One of the finest Polish painters of the “Munich school”. He was, alongside Józef Brandt and Władysław Czachórski, the most popular of the Polish artists living and working in Munich. He went to Munich in 1873, after completing his studies in Warsaw and Dresden. He spent a year as a student at the Munich Academy of Fine Arts under the guidance of Alexander Wagner, and later moved to a private painting studio run by Józef Brandt. Wierusz-Kowalski won recognition of the critics and the public early in his career. His paintings were awarded medals at exhibitions and were sought-after by collectors and German art dealers. In 1890, he was appointed Honorary Professor of the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich. He painted genre scenes and historical/genre scenes with the motifs of horsemen, knights, hunters, horses, wolves and snow. Having travelled to Africa in 1903, he also took up oriental themes. There is a relatively small number of his works in the collections of Polish museums. His paintings, mainly sold on the German market, were mostly bought by private collectors in Germany, and the United States. At present, his works often appear on the Polish art market, and always arouse great interest among collectors.
