Polychrome Embroidered Suzani with Star and Floral Motifs

The typical Suzani design of a central field with a surrounding border is particularly noticeable in this textile. The central, open field, which features an eight-pointed star surrounded by floral sprays, is set off by the repeated rosette motifs in the border. Indeed, looking closely, it is evident that the rosette border is itself bordered by two narrow borders. The juxtaposition of a central field and borders is common in Islamic art and can be seen on doors, ceramics, and manuscript illustration.
