Porcelain Figure of a Bodhisattva

Field Museum

Field Museum
Chicago, United States

The Buddha came to China accompanied by a host of attendants and bodhisattvas—enlightened beings who remain on earth to help humanity and attendants to the Buddha. This seated figure may be Avalokitesvara, a bodhisattva of compassion (known in China as "Guanyin"). This rare piece is made of porcelain and dates to the Yuan period (AD 1279В–1368).
