Heinrich Böll was one of the most important left-wing intellectuals and writers in post-war Germany from the 1950s to 70s. In his numerous novels, short stories, radio plays and essays he grappled with the young Federal Republic. Böll was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1972.
