The author and subject of this painting are unknown, although it may be of French origin. It serves to illustrate the overloaded trend in women's fashions around 1830. The lady is wearing a daytime outfit closed at the neck with ballooned sleeves. Her hair is parted in the middle and drawn in with curls on either side of her head. The extravagance of the outfit reaches its peak in the hat, which is adorned with red flowers that add a dash of colour to the work. Its vaporous delicacy contrasts with the severe face of the subject, whose face is depicted with great realism. This quality of the painting can also be seen in the painter's capacity to convey the feel of the smooth fabric and gauzes.
