This painting is a pendant to 'Portrait of a Lady,' also in the USC Fisher Museum of Art's permanent collection.
Although Bartholomeus van der Helst's used mostly subdued tones, this painting remains an example of the Dutch artist's colorful realism as seen in his handling of the subject's red hair and delicately rendered hands.
