Portrait of a man

The fashion-conscious and certainly aristocratic sitter has not been identified. A clue might have been given by the medallion hanging at his side, but this appears to have been defaced and repainted. A highly successful court portrait painter Pourbus worked for the Gonzaga court at Mantua before settling in Paris in 1609. From the costume and hair style this work seems likely to date from his time in Paris.
