Michael Dahl was a Swedish born portrait painter who made a successful career in England. He arrived in London in 1682 probably hoping to replace the recently deceased Sir Peter Lely as the most prominent painter in the country. This position went instead to Sir Godfrey Kneller, who would become a great rival of Dahl.
