This portrait was painted during the First World War, during which the 2/14th battalion of the London Regiment (known as the London Scottish) served in Salonica and then Palestine. The artist, John Chaplin, has not been definitely identified, but may be Private Frank John Chaplin (1897-1918) of 'B' Company, 2/14th battalion of the London Regiment, who is buried in Jerusalem War Cemetery.
