The artist was born in Sri Lanka (Ceylon) during the British colonial time. Although he did not receive any formal art education, he was known as a talented portrait painter. He repeatedly exhibited his works in the exhibitions of Ceylon Society of Arts founded in 1891 with the British support. The painting conveys the academic trend of Sri Lankan art before the rise of the 43 Group. He accurately depicted the appearance of the model with his sincere attitude. Another work depicting the same model wearing a different outfit is also known to exist.
