Catharina van Hemessen, an amateur painter, was the second daughter of the painter Jan van Hemessen and was lady-in-waiting to Maria of Hungary at Brussels. Catharina painted chiefly religious scenes and female portraits. It is likely that the portrait here depicts a lady-in-waiting, elegantly dressed in a black bodice with red sleeves. From the van Ertborn collection.
