Portrait of an Elderly Man with Beard

Lievens, Jan1640

New Orleans Museum of Art

New Orleans Museum of Art
New Orleans, United States

Portrait of a bearded old man against a darkened background. Hair and beard are blond with golden highlights. He is turned three-quarters towards the right. This Lievens portrait reflects the close relationship between Lievens and Rembrandt. The two artists shared a teacher and, later, a studio, as well as an artistic style. Indeed, the work of the two artists was at one point so similar that it was indistinguishable. However, Lievens was once thought to have been the better artist. Time has reversed this evaluation.
