Anonymous French artist1560

Hallwyl Museum

Hallwyl Museum
Stockholm, Sweden

One of a pair of portraits in which the styles and the costumes suggests they were painted in France around 1560. Both paintings have earlier been attributed to the French court portraitist Francois Clouet (1510-1572). However the two portraits are both identically inscribed with a monogram that may be read as G:C followed by FEC, (fecit) for made by. The monogram is probably authentic but has not yet been deciphered.
