Oil on canvas copy of original portrait by Thomas Sully from 1814. Ann Caroline Coleman (1796-1819) was the daughter of prominent Lancaster, Pennsylvania iron manufacturing businessman Robert Coleman. In 1819, she was engaged to future president James Buchanan. Ann broke off their engagement over unclear circumstances and went to visit relatives in Philadelphia, where she died mysteriously shortly thereafter, possibly of a laudanum overdose.
