After the end of his studies in Paris, Vlaho Bukovac moved around, staying in Paris, Cavtat, Dubrovnik, Cetinje, Split and Korčula, painting numerous portraits and compositions on various topics.
Soon after his training, Bukovac departed from the academic line, worked in nature and painted a number of small, intimate landscapes, in which the ideas of plein air and impressionism can be felt. Bukovac's portraits evolved from the dark gallery tone, via a Renoiresque freshness and coloring, to portraits painted in the open air, airy and light.
