Soon after his training at the prestigious École des Beaux Arts in Paris, Vlaho Bukovac (1855 - 1922) departed from the academic line, worked in nature and painted a number of small, intimate landscapes, in which the ideas of plein air and impressionism can be felt. Bukovac's portraits evolved from the dark gallery tone, via a Renoiresque freshness and coloring, to portraits painted in the open air, airy and light.
