Portrait of Carlo Alberto

Carlo Alberto, of the Savoy Carignano offshoot, was crowned in 1831 when the elder Savoy branch died out with Carlo Felice. In the Forties he opened up to a policy of gradual reform, culminating in his famous 1848 Statute.
