Gerrit van Honthorst was court painter to stadholder Frederik Hendrik and painted many portraits of the prince and his wife, Amalia of Solms. He had a large studio where these compositions were copied. This painting is one of those copies.

Frederik Hendrik was a second cousin of Johan Maurits. He collected art, including works by Rembrandt. But here he is portrayed as a commander-in-chief of the army.
