Ogiński was one of the leaders of the Bar Confederation in the Grand Duchy of Lithuania. He developed the infrastructure in the Grand Duchy, including the Ogiński Canal, joining the watersheds of the Neman and Dnieper rivers. During the Great Sejm he supported the reformers and the Constitution and resigned from his post of the grand hetman in response to the events of the Targowica Confederation in 1793.
