Portrait of Rita Angus

Marti Friedlander1968

Auckland Art Gallery Toi o Tāmaki

Auckland Art Gallery Toi o Tāmaki
Auckland, New Zealand

One of Marti Friedlander’s strengths is her ability to quickly form relationships with the people she photographs. Rita Angus almost never posed for a professional photographer. It is a testimony to Friedlander’s skill that she convinced this reclusive artist to agree to be photographed inside her studio for the first time in 30 years. Friedlander’s photograph is a heroic image. This brave portrait shows a painter dedicated to art at a time when it was almost impossible for a New Zealand woman to be a full-time artist.

I used my camera when I first arrived here to record the unfamiliar and make it coherent . . . I had grown up and lived in London, and the fears that I had to overcome were more about isolation from a world in which I found conversation, friendship, and access to the arts so effortless. I needed to find people with whom I could share my interests and concerns.’
