Francisco Goya1815

Zaragoza, Spain

This official portrait of the king was painted when Ferdinand VII returned to Spain after the War of Independence. This painting and the one of the Duke of San Carlos were commissioned by the Aragon Imperial Canal Board and hung in Canal House in Zaragoza's Santa Cruz Square. This is one of the finest portraits of the monarch. He is wearing a dark outfit and a red cape with an ermine trim. The gentleman's sash of the Royal Order of Charles III and the Golden Fleece insignia can also be seen. Francisco Goya managed to capture the king's personality in his face, showing his untrusting and surly character. It is on deposit from the Ebro Hydrographic Confederation (Confederación Hidrográfica del Ebro).
