New York, United States

As an artist, Lester Johnson came of age in the 1950s, during the heyday of Abstract Expressionism. He soon took a decided turn away from abstraction, however, and concentrated on expressive figural depictions. Portrait Study #2 is a typical painting from the 1960s, when Johnson worked with a limited palette comprised almost entirely of grays and blacks.
