The back of the postcard reads" Thomas Hart Benton, teacher, lawyer, soldier, editor, scholar, statesman, United States Senator for Missouri for 30 years from 1820-1850. First and greatest Statesman west of the Mississippi, first martyre [sic] to slavery, a National Statesman who was never connected with a single act of personal dishonor or one unworthy act of legislation. These tablets erected by Elizabeth Benton Chapter, Daughters of the American Revolution, 1915."
