Famed food entrepreneur H. J. Heinz opened Heinz Pier along the Atlantic City boardwalk in 1898 after receiving favorable response to his products at the 1893 Chicago World's Fair. At Heinz Pier, visitors found a break from the whirlwind activity of the boardwalk and enjoyed more subtle forms of entertainment, which included demonstrations in a large kitchen (complete with hot and cold food samples), touring the art collection or simply relaxing in the reclining chairs of the sun parlor. Upon visiting the pier, each patron received a small but popular souvenir; the complimentary Heinz pickle pin.
