In 1933 residents of Chicago hosted a world's fair, called the Century of Progress International Exposition, a celebration of the city's centennial. Thirty-nine million visitors enjoyed the fair's lagoon and midway, a 16th-century Belgian Village, countless other attractions, and a variety of night clubs, where emerging stars such as Judy Garland performed. At Enchanted Island, children enjoyed sliding down Magic Mountain, admiring the fairy castle, and watching plays staged just for them. In late October, the Graf Zeppelin, a German airship, made an appearance at the fair, circling Lake Michigan for nearly two hours before landing at a nearby airport in Glenview.
