In 1933 residents of Chicago hosted the Century of Progress International Exposition, a celebration of the city's centennial. Thirty-nine million visitors attended the world's fair located on the shores of Lake Michigan; they toured the geometric art deco buildings and admired the industrial and technological exhibits, which promoted the fair's motto, "Science Finds, Industry Applies, Man Adapts." Instead of walking the expansive the 424-acre fairgrounds, visitors boarded the Sky Ride, a transporter bridge that carried them from one end of the fair to the other. For some automobile manufacturers like Ford and General Motors, the fair offered an ideal spot to display their newest models.
