The "Dick and Jane" series of books effectively taught many English-speaking people to read, from the 1930s until the 1970s. The books were initially aimed at beginning readers; they later expanded to include books and workbooks in various different subjects and aimed at older students. Though criticized for both plagiarism and racism, the books hold a place in popular culture. The publishers offered a wealth of related teaching materials, including two-sided posters based on the exact illustrations from the texts.
