This female suffrage propaganda poster was designed and printed at the Suffrage Atelier in Shepherd's Bush, west London, in 1912. The poster represents women's suffrage as an armoured knight: securing the right to vote was regarded as the only defence against the sexual and economic exploitation of women. It refers to the oppressive situation of powerless women unable to vote, employed in factories as 'sweated labour'.
A major aim of the suffrage movement was to improve the conditions of working-class women by achieving female representation in parliament and trade unions.
