When the Romans bathed, they washed their bodies with oil rather than soap. They therefore took pots of bath oil with them when they went to the bath house. The one shown here may well have been used in the Roman bath house that was excavated in the centre of Heerlen. The beautifully decorated bronze pot must have been expensive. It probably once had a handle.
