Potter's workshop

Museo de Artes y Costumbres Populares de Sevilla

Museo de Artes y Costumbres Populares de Sevilla
Sevilla, Spain

This workshop is from Cortegana (Huelva), where potteries would commonly be installed in the kitchen with the wheel fixed to a masonry support. The main features shown are the potter's foot-operated wheel and the oxide mill for producing enamel.

Ceramics from Cortegana are similar in technique to those used in the south of Extremadura, but the decoration that characterises the roduction is completely different: this consists of allowing the washes (oxides and clays) to drip on to the surface of the pieces while they slowly turn, thereby creating very varied spiral motifs. Production has mostly been destined for tableware, although there are ample pieces for cooking, and containers for liquids and storage.
