Early 19th century

Sadberk Hanım Museum

Sadberk Hanım Museum
İstanbul, Türkiye

The niche consists of two columns supporting a foliate arch. Flowering branches are wound around the columns. At the summit of the niche is a group of buildings with pennants indicating their military character. Inside the niche is a castle with a large tree growing out of the roof. The tree is surrounded by tiny stars. In the spaces on either side of the niche arch are buildings and spiralling motifs. Around all four sides of the prayer mat are a series of large motifs including buildings with flying pennants, a circular tower, and a triangular motif from which leafy branches seem to spring. Encircling the edge is a narrow border consisting of rock motifs arranged side by side.
