An episode from  the Hindu epic Mahabharata is about Yudhishthira, the eldest of the Pandava brothers, who performs the Ashvamedha (horse-sacrifice), in which a special horse is allowed to wander freely for a year. Anyone who challenges the horse's freedom would face the accompanying Pandava army, led by the youngest Pandava brother, Prince Arjuna. The painting shows preparations for the sacrifice.
