Prepona amazonica

Prepona butterflies live in Mexico, Central and South America, and the Caribbean. They form part of the Leafwing butterfly group. The vibrant upper side of their wings is offset by mottled brown underwings. This makes the insect resemble a dead leaf when its wings are closed, helping it to hide from predators. They feed on rotting fruit, dung and even carrion!
