President Lincoln's Cottage
Washington, DC, United States

Meeting with former Wisconsin Governor Alexander Randall on August 19, 1864.

Lincoln during the meeting expressed exasperation at the calls from Democrats to negotiate a peace that would allow for a continuation of slavery. The accompanying audio recording recalls part of Lincoln's determination to net renege on the Emancipation Proclamation: "There have been men who have proposed to me to return to slavery the black warriors of Port Hudson & Olustee to their masters to conciliate the South. I should be damned in time & in eternity for so doing."

The official recruitment of black servicemen began in 1863 and was immediately controversial. By the end of the Civil War nearly 200,000 black Americans had served the Union cause as soldiers and sailors providing indispensable aid to winning the Civil War.
