Prie/Dieu

Giovanni Giuseppe PicciniEarly XVIII century

Museo Poldi Pezzoli

Museo Poldi Pezzoli
Milano, Italy

Long attributed to the workshop of Andrea Fantoni, this prie-dieu or prayer desk is definitely the work of Piccini, who described it in detail in some notes on carved objects he had made. In particular, we know it was made for Dr. Ignazio Antonioli from Brescia. The rich decoration, besides figures of angels and saints, includes an Old Testament scene (Daniel in the lions’ den), a Deposition with Mary, the pious women, Nicodemus, Joseph of Arimathea, St. John, and a scene of Purgatory.
