Printed handbill announcing a public open air 'Votes for Women' meeting

Printed handbill announcing a public open air 'Votes for Women' meeting to be held on Sunday 28 October 1906 in Finsbury Park. Organised by the Women's Social and Political Union the flyer notes that the meeting was to be held in support of the imprisonment of eleven women for demanding the votes. The meeting included speeches by a number of Suffragette leaders including Emmeline and Christabel Pankhurst and the husbands of two of those imprisoned - Frederick Pethick-Lawerence and Mr Cobden-Sanderson. The meeting refers to the arrest of eleven prominent Suffragettes including Adela Pankhurst, Emmeline Pethick-Lawrence, Mary Gawthorpe and Anne Cobden Sanderson during a demonstration outside Parliament on 23rd October 1906. The subsequent trial and imprisonment of the women resulted in much indignation amongst the politically aware middle classes, many of whom subsequently joined the Women's Social and Political Union.
