In 1951 Diego Rivera was asked to paint a mural for the façade of the Mexico ’68 Stadium built as part of University City. However, because of his leftist political views, funds for the work were soon suspended.
His design proposed the depiction of pre-Hispanic games, Colonial games, and the games of our time. In the end he only completed the section corresponding to the motto of the University: “The spirit will speak through my race,” an abbreviated version of a phrase taken from José Vasconcelos, that in its entirely reads: “The Latin American spirit will speak through my cosmic race.”
