Miners and their fellow campaigners protested in Saarbrücken on 14 June 1991. They fought against the impending closure of pits in the Saar region on the Ludwigsplatz in Saarbrücken. Approximately 25,000 miners objected against the plans of then current Federal Minister of Economics Jürgen Möllemann (FDP) to cut coal mining subsidies. Among other things, they chanted the threat: "Wenn̒s an der Saar brennt, wird̒s auch in Bonn heiß" (literally: "When things heat up at the Saar, Boon is soon to follow")
