Tegernsee, 1517

This Psalter from Tegernsee also shows us how much time a copist needed for copying the text and how much time the illumination required. Under the Tegernsee Abbot Maurus Leyrer (1512–1528) a total of three of such large-format Psalters (Clm 19201 – Clm 19203) were commissioned within three years for use in the monastery. Since all three volumes show traces of use, they were presumably used at the same time for singing the Psalms in three groups in church. The copist, Konrad Sartori, finished work on this Psalter exactly one year after completing the preceding volume (Clm 19202, also in the collection of the BSB). In the colophon at the end of the book, "Frater Conradus" states his name and the date of completion. The illumination even took until the year 1518. This is indicated by the finely painted date on the narrow side of the tomb of Jesus in the representation of the entombment (fol. 144r) and on the shop counter in the image "Die drei Frauen kaufen Spezereien" (the three women buy spices; fol. 204r).

Fol. 154r: Resurrection of Christ, in the initial D at the beginning of Psalm 109, created by the workshop of Albrecht Altdorfer
