Pterodactylus kochi Wagner is considered by scientists to be synonymous with Pterodactylus antiquus, the first species of pterosaur identified. It was first identified in 1784 by Italian scientist Cosmo Allessandro Collini from remains found in the Solnhofen limestone at Bavaria, Germany. It was first thought to be an aquatic animal, but was later identified as a flying reptile. Pterodactylus had a wingspan of up to 3.5ft long and lived around the Late Jurassic period (approximately 150 million years ago).
